kinda asian fetishy!

but still gorgeous...

Kabuki, David Mack

Some very beautiful black and white art. Very still, as in, not a lot of movement in the scenes. Haunting and gorgeous. Mack dedicated the book to his mother, who died fairly young; its influence is prevalent in the plot. The layouts are innovative, a little confusing at times, but you know...dope.

V for Vendetta

V for Vendetta is terribly good! I'm thisclose to finishing the comic!

UPDATE:
It's fantastic. I will go see the movie and begin the compare/contrast thing. I always love being THAT asshole.

mindfuck.

I just finished reading The Watchmen. Blew my mind. Anything I say will be a spoiler, so I urge you to read it yourself before the movie this spring! <3 So glad that R, P, and V have also read it...I have folks with whom to discuss!

V for Vendetta
is by the same author and looks equally good!

ps: and OMG! Smashing Pumpkins on the trailer for Watchmen. I love this song ("The Beginning is the End is the Beginning") Which, FYI, was used ("The End is the beginning is the end") for Batman and Robin the movie, and then adapted for The Watchmen.

virtual worlds

wtf, people! it looks amazing!

I have always been a fan of SIM-type games. I never got into "Second Life," but I was pretty salty when my PC wasn't fast enough to fully accommodate SIMS 2 years ago, and equally salty when I lost access to a GameCube for Animal Crossings. There's just something about creating and maintaining a world that I really like? It's nerdy. It's a cartoon. It's right up my alley.

the broke-ass time/space continuum

Long Love Letter, 2002

I think my biggest peeve was that I was trying to see my man, Tosh (that's my nickname for him, y'all!) all up on the screen. However, his part was pretty minimal, and I'd seen all the expressions he's used in delivering lines at this point. I think he only has 7 "acting" faces. But whatever, I'm there to learn things from the show. Onward!

As big a fan I am of quantum physics, time travel, and parallel universes, there's just always something broke as hell in the plot that uses these concepts as fundamentals in its storyline. Either there's a hasty mistake written somewhere in the continuum, or it ends a little too conveniently. Such was the case for Long Love Letter. While terribly entertaining, its open-ended conclusion leaves much to be desired. OKay, that's not entirely true, but it comes from the school of "hey, this is quantum physics. parallel universes means that we can entertain EVERY POSSIBLE OUTCOME." So, yeah, no. I'm too linear for that kinda shit.

It is billed as sci-fi, but take heed, there are some love stories throughout the plot. (I mean, when ISN'T there one?) It's eco-angle, and dip into the metaphorics are also a little heavy handed, but it was a nice break from the sap romances I've been all about lately. Anyway, it takes place in a school (surprise, surprise! School must be awesome in Japan!) and you have your reality show archetypes, resulting in your basic trials, tribulations, mutations, time travel, and ghosts.

TAAA-DAAA! And that's the end of the story.

diving deeper...

Fellow Jerseyan, R, has just hunted down copies of some comic books I've been looking for...to read. Not to own. Because I'm watching Dark Knight for the first time with my sisters this Friday, I think he's hooking me up by giving priority to the Batman stuff he's found. WHAT A GREAT FRIEND! He gave me:

No Man's Land, 1999
Year One, 1987
The Killing Joke, 1988

It has been advised that I read the Killing Joke, first. So, I will. Pray for me as this new chapter of my life begins! Here's hoping I don't get into cosplay for next year's Comicon. But at least if i do go, I can mean it. Oh my! Yet another series of fascinating addictions in my life.

I find it terrible and amazing that I'm excited about this. Nerds, any recommendations? (I've already been directed to Frank Miller stuff. Thanks, J!)
